Map Making

On a rainy day, when you're stuck inside, you can always pass the time charting the great outdoors.

* Make a map of your neighborhood, using the private names you've given various locations. For example, if you call the house two blocks over the "mean lady's house," that's the name you'll put on your map. If you make a map of the route you take to school, put in the shortcuts and show which neighbors' yards and pets are best avoided.

* You and your friends can agree on mapping out the way to each others houses, then later compare them and see who notices the most or doesn't know the shortcuts!

* It's fun to do this on graph paper because the squares make it easy to keep things in scale. Don't forget to make a key for your map -- you can use the symbols shown on this page, or make up your own.

Our question: Can you think of other ways a map like this would come in handy? Let usknow by sending us your answer now!

* The book has lots of other projects you can make on a rainy or cold day.
