What You Can Do With a Barbie.
By Bob Applegate
We're not suggesting that this is the full repertoire of things you cando with an old Barbie. All we know is this: these things have actuallybeen done.
1. Shish-kaBarbie
You will need:
Three or more Barbie heads
Assorted vegetables: mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, zucchini chunks, onion quarters, baby carrots, celery, etc. Don't worry. These are justfor looks. You don't have to actually eat them.
Remove heads from Barbies (save torso and limbs for later use). Slideseveral different vegetables through a shish-kabob skewer. Next, put theskewer through Barbie's neck-hole and push it out through her hair-do.Add more vegetables, another head, more vegetables, etc., until you runout of room, or heads. (For a permanent display, use plasticvegetables.)
2. Ground Zero Barbie
You will need:
A Barbie (preferably dressed in red, white and blue)
A package of sparklers
Four "Catherine" wheels
A rocket
A large body of water
Packing or gaffer's tape
An ice-pick or metal skewer
Poke several holes in Barbie's head with the ice-pick or skewer. Withthe packing tape, attach Barbie to the rocket at her torso. Splay armsand legs and attach one Catherine wheel to the end of each limb. Putsparklers into each hole in Barbie's head. Stake Ground Zero Barbieinto the ground. Light the sparklers and the Catherine wheels. Standback! The sparks from the spinning wheels should set off the rocket, butif not, wait 'til the sparklers and wheels have completely died out, thenlaunch Barbie into a large and uninhabited body of water.
Note: Boys doing Ground Zero Barbie definitely need a parent's help. The chances you'll get a grown-up to help you? Zilch. Maybe it's just as well. Sometimes, it's more fun to read about launching a Barbie than it is to actually do it. Besides, Ground Zero Barbie may not be launched in states where fireworksare illegal.
3. Pickled Barbie (Barbie in Aspic)
You will need:
A Barbie (Little Mermaid may be substituted)
A half-gallon mayonnaise jar, with lid. (You can get one of thesefrom a restaurant, or the school cafeteria.)
A jar of pickling spices (you'll find this in the spice section ofyour supermarket).
Two packages Knox unflavored gelatin
A large cooking pot
A tea kettle
Water
A funnel and a measuring cup
Clean the jar. Place Barbie and spices in jar. Open gelatin boxes andpour contents of each package (eight in all) into a measuring cup. Filla tea kettle with 6 cups of water, and let it reach a boil. Set aside.Measure 2 cups of cold water into a large cooking pot. Sprinkle gelatinin water and let stand for 2 minutes, until all the gelatin isdissolved. Add contents of kettle. Stir, and let mixture coolslightly. Pour gelatin into mayonnaise jar through a funnel. Letgelatin set. Put lid on jar and display.
Under no circumstances may you use a Barbie that is still in use.(The consequences will be horrible.)

The book has great ideas about how to make a shrunken head and a sock puppet.
