You can make money scavenging from jobsites in your neighborhood. Introduce yourself to the site foreman and ask him to put aside any extra nails, glass, screws, cable, gem boxes and other stuff they're not using. My mom pays one cent per nail and 5 cents for each piece of glass. Other people will, too.Note: Hold on to the color-coded telephone wire, tho: you can do lots of neat stuff with it.
